“I love songs about horses, railroads, land, Judgment Day, family, hard times, whiskey, courtship, marriage, adultery, separation, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion, patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak and love. And Mother. And God.” – Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash is a legend that needs no introduction. His music has inspired people around the world with a combination of grit and grace. As a youth, Johnny Cash began voice lessons and after about three, his teacher advised him to stop and not change a thing. He saw that Johnny was unique and recognized that lessons would only serve to gentrify his natural talent. The world owes a little something to that nameless voice teacher.
Beyond musical talent, Johnny Cash was noted for his wild side. He and his band members once bought five hundred baby chickens and set a hundred loose on each floor of their hotel as a joke. A life with numerous rough patches, he found many ways to walk those memories back into their proper places in his mind, some successful, some unsuccessful.
Johnny also had a tender side; a collector of antique books and advocate for Native American rights and prison reform. The lyrics of the songs he wrote and chose to sing focused on the lives of working-class people; he sang of struggle and of love. The love between Johnny and June is the focus of the award-winning movie, I Walk the Line. They were married for 35 years separated only by the mantle of death in 2003. Johnny held June’s hand in her final moments, and he died just four months later.
When asked what people can do to commemorate his birthday on February 26th, the Cash family simply asked that people wear black. To lift our glass properly in memory of this honored musician, we at rokz have named our espresso infused whiskey recipe after him. Nothing fancy, designed for sipping while listening to any of his 96 albums. Yes, you read that right—96 studio albums. This was a man whose whole life was music… looks like that voice teacher was right. While we’re at it, let’s raise our glass to him too.
THE MAN IN BLACK
Infuse 16 oz Jack Daniels Whiskey with rokz Espresso Infusion kit for 1-2 days. Add a few ice cubes to a rocks glass and pour in the infused whiskey. Sip and enjoy.
